55 Inch TV Width in cm: Standard 16:9 Screen Size Guide
You have a 55-inch TV, or one on order, and a TV unit, wall niche or corner waiting for it. So how wide is a 55 inch in cm? The 139.7 cm figure everyone quotes is the diagonal, which is not the number your tape measure will show along the edge.
Quick answer: A 55-inch 16:9 screen measures about 121.8 cm wide by 68.5 cm tall. Measure the lit screen itself with the tape check in our step-by-step measuring guide before you buy a protector or choose a space.

How wide is a 55 inch in cm? Where 121.8 cm and 68.5 cm come from
The “55 inch” label is only the diagonal, corner to opposite corner of the lit screen. Most TVs are 16:9, so picture the screen as a rectangle 16 units wide and 9 units tall.

Its diagonal is the square root of (16² + 9²), or √337. Each unit therefore equals 55 ÷ √337 inches. The width is 55 × 16 ÷ √337 = 47.9 inches, or 121.8 cm, and the height is 55 × 9 ÷ √337 = 27.0 inches, or 68.5 cm.
The same method works for any 16:9 screen; a 65-inch screen, for example, comes to about 144 cm by 81 cm. The inch figures in this guide are rounded to one decimal place, and the centimetre figures to the nearest tenth.
Small differences from a real panel are expected and do not indicate a fault. The calculation shows what a standard 16:9 panel should measure, not a guarantee for every model, which is why the tape reading still has the final word.
To check another size quickly, multiply the diagonal in inches by 0.872 for the width and by 0.490 for the height. A 43-inch screen, for instance, works out to about 37.5 by 21.1 inches. Multiply by 2.54 to get centimetres.
The basic conversions, quickly
- 1 inch is exactly 2.54 cm.
- 55 inches equals 139.7 cm (55 × 2.54).
To convert centimetres to inches, divide by 2.54.
Going the other way, multiply inches by 2.54. A niche listed as 49 inches wide is 49 × 2.54 = 124.5 cm, which leaves too little room once the bezel and cable clearance are counted. A 125 cm console is 125 ÷ 2.54 = 49.2 inches.
Because 2.54 is exact, the only rounding comes from you, so keep one decimal place in inches and one in centimetres. Always convert every figure into the same unit before you compare furniture, TV and protector.
For a rough check on the spot, multiply inches by 2.5 and add 2 percent. Twenty inches gives 50 cm plus 1 cm, so about 51 cm, against the exact 50.8 cm. Write the unit beside every number in your notes so inches are never read as centimetres.
The two measurements that decide the fit
Screen width and overall TV width are different numbers, and mixing them up causes most wrong-size mistakes. The screen is the lit picture area.
The overall width adds the bezel, usually only a few millimetres per side, which is why it is slightly wider than the screen. The stand is a third thing: it may be a central pedestal or two feet set wide apart, and its depth can surprise people.
| Measurement | Typical figure | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Diagonal | 139.7 cm | Comparing TV sizes only |
| Screen width | 121.8 cm (47.9 in) | Screen protector: order by this width |
| Screen height | 68.5 cm (27.0 in) | Screen protector: order by this height |
| Overall width with bezels | slightly wider than the screen | Wall niche: allow a few centimetres of clearance per side |
| Stand width | varies by model | TV unit or console top |
Bezel, stand width and depth change from model to model, so confirm them on your TV’s spec sheet or with a tape.
For furniture, we suggest a console at least 125 cm wide, and more if your TV has feet set wide. For a niche, leave a few centimetres on each side for ventilation and cables. Our guide to the full dimensions of a 55 inch TV covers depth and stand sizes in more detail.
A tape-measure check that takes two minutes
- Switch the TV on with a bright picture so you can see where the lit area ends.
- Measure the lit screen from the left edge to the right edge, in cm, along the middle. Expect about 121 to 123 cm.
- Measure top to bottom the same way. Expect about 68 to 69 cm.
- Write all four down before you order anything.
If your readings are close to the calculated width and height, you have a standard 16:9 panel. Suppose the width reads 118 cm. That gap is almost 4 cm, which is far more than a few millimetres of normal variation.
Check three things first: whether the picture fills the screen or shows black bars at the sides, whether the tape sagged or drifted, and whether you measured the true lit edge rather than the dark border. If all three look right, repeat the measurement as described below. If the reading still falls short of the calculated width, compare it with the panel’s spec sheet before ordering a protector.
A few habits make the readings more reliable. Use a rigid steel tape rather than a soft sewing tape, which sags and adds length. On a screen this wide, ask a second person to hold the tape end so it stays level.
Take each measurement at three points and use the middle reading if they agree within a few millimetres. A larger spread usually means the tape drifted, so repeat rather than average.
Which number to use when ordering a protector
Order by the width and height from the check above, not the diagonal and not the overall TV width. A difference of a few millimetres from your tape reading is normal, since measuring a lit edge is not exact.

The size on the product name only has to match your TV’s class. Screen Guardian lists protectors for 32, 43, 50, 55, 65 and 75 inch TVs. A 50-inch panel, which is about 110.7 cm by 62.3 cm, needs a different protector from a 55-inch one.
Check the product page title for your size and the price shown there; the 55 Inch TV Screen Protector is ₹3,499. If a wrong-size protector arrives, the 7-day returns policy covers it: email us and we will sort it within 24 hours.

Frequently asked questions
Will a 55-inch protector fit a 50 or 58-inch TV?
No. A 55-inch protector is sized for a 55-inch panel, so compare your measured screen width and height with 121.8 cm × 68.5 cm for a 55-inch panel. A 50-inch panel is about 110.7 cm × 62.3 cm. Match the measurements, not just the label.
Do curved or ultrawide screens measure the same?
Not necessarily. Ultrawide ratios differ from 16:9, so measure width and height directly rather than calculating.
Should I measure with the TV off?
Switch it on if you can. The lit area shows the true edge, which can sit slightly inside the black border.
